This paper is collaborative in every respect. Jacobs conceived of the study and was the overall director of the research. Macdonald administered the project. Detailed tasks were jointly organized and fieldwork was done by all four authors, usually in groups of two or three. Marsh and Wilson undertook the general historic research. Following identification of the streets to be documented, each author took responsibility for a number of streets. The comparative analysis matrix was first conceived by Jacobs but was modified by discussion and prepared in its final form by Marsh.
